01778 230 120 01778 230 129 enquiries@hegarty.co.ukWe believe in developing and nurturing talent to help our trainees reach their fullest potential. As a trainee at Hegarty, you won’t be sitting on the sidelines; you will be gaining real hands on experience.
We focus not only on developing your legal knowledge, but also on the other skills that a great lawyer needs, such as building relationships with clients, business development, commercial acumen and much, much more.
Your training contract will be for two years, full time. Your training is divided up into four seats, each lasting six months, from the following departments within the firm:
Your fourth and final seat of training will be a seat of your choice – usually the area into which you wish to qualify.
Upon successful completion of your training contract you can apply to the roll of solicitors in England and Wales, which entitles you to practice as a solicitor.
As a trainee, you’ll be assigned a mentor, someone you can go to with basic queries, problems or just to talk. This is usually a newly qualified solicitor who has just come through the training process themselves and who understands exactly what you are experiencing.
You will also be allocated a training principal, who will be a more experienced solicitor who is responsible for your training and development, and with whom you can discuss specific queries or concerns you might have.
You will receive a six monthly appraisal of your progress from the training partner, which will be based on feedback from the head of department of your previous seat. These appraisals are conducted in accordance with the Law Society Guidelines and give you the opportunity to comment on the training you are receiving as well as providing you with feedback about your performance.
You will need to have a law degree and have completed your legal practice course (LPC) before you can apply. Applicants with a minimum 2:1 degree are preferred.
In addition, you will also need to able to demonstrate that you have that little extra something. We are looking for trainees who are motivated, positive and ambitious. You must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work as a team. You must have real energy, commitment and drive, and, above all else, you must be willing to help us go the extra mile for our clients.
We are committed to equal opportunities and do not discriminate in any way on grounds of race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion or disability.

Angelina Kotowicz-Mietelska – Trainee Legal Secretary
In addition to trainee solicitors, we also employ a number of trainees in other roles.
Read Angelina's testimonial to see how our current trainees are finding the experience.
After finishing college at the age of 19, I immediately went into a full-time job and I am still working my way up.
University never really appealed to me and that is why I continued to go into different job roles from the age of 15.
I joined Hegarty in September 2016 as an administration assistant. I have always liked the idea of working in an office environment and this is partly why I enjoy working at Hegarty. In June 2017, I became a trainee legal secretary within the Litigation Department. I am very pleased to have gained this position and find it fascinating learning about the different areas of Litigation Law.
In my opinion, starting as an administration assistant was the best option for me as I got to know everyone within the firm and the firm itself. This gave me an understanding of the services we provide our clients with.
I was worried that I would never have a ‘career’ as I did not go to University but the firm has changed this for me. There are many training courses that I can take to help me develop and progress further within the firm and I can still do this whilst working. I know this will be challenging, however, I am ready for this challenge. Additionally, I know that the staff will also support me with what I choose to do in the future.
Every staff member is ever so helpful here at Hegarty including the Partners who are very easy to talk to and give excellent advice. I am so happy to be a part of it all. Let’s see what the future brings!
