How long have you been a lawyer?

I joined a local firm in Peterborough, Rigby Williams, as they were then when I left school in September, so it would be September 1968. And I worked ever since then. Ending up working at Hegarty since the 1st of April 1999.

Did you always want to be a lawyer, or did you have other career aspirations?

I really wanted to be a footballer or a cricketer. So, I've only been for one interview, and I went for an interview at Rigby's to join at the bottom, straight from school. And that's what happened. I got a job and never looked back, as they say.

What do you enjoy most about being a lawyer?

Well, I've met a lot of nice people. Judges, barristers, other solicitors and, of course, clients. A lot of interaction with people throughout, which has been sometimes good, sometimes bad. But it's a good aspect of the job.

How have things changed in the time you have been practicing?

How long have you got for that answer? Things have changed immensely. When I first started, you’re learning and you’re learning. But really, you’re learning every day. The law has also changed a lot. Originally, when getting a divorce people had to go to court to attend hearings to obtain their divorce. Now it’s moving to online. So, over the years there has been a massive progression.

What plans do you have for your retirement?

Grandchildren will play, I think, an important role. I also want to try to improve my golf and continue with my veteran’s cricket.

Thank you Carl and we wish you a long and happy retirement - the Hegarty Team.

    Stay up-to-date with Hegarty
