White Ribbon Day | Why It Matters & How We Can All Help End Violence Against Women

White Ribbon Day, happening tomorrow, is an important global event that encourages communities, organisations, and individuals to take a stand against violence against women and girls.

As a local law firm that supports clients affected by domestic abuse and related issues, we recognise the significance of this campaign and the vital role we all play in promoting safety, respect, and equality.

    What Is White Ribbon Day?

White Ribbon Day began in Canada in 1991, when a group of men and boys united to raise awareness of violence against women following the tragic Montreal Massacre in 1989. During this attack, 14 women were murdered, and many others injured in an act widely recognised as misogynistic violence.

In 2000, the United Nations designated White Ribbon Day as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marking the beginning of a 16-day global campaign running annually from 25th November to 10th December.

Why White Ribbon Day Is Important

Violence against women is not solely a women’s issue, it affects entire families, workplaces, and communities. White Ribbon Day serves as a reminder that we must all work together to challenge harmful attitudes and create a safer society.

Current statistics highlight the scale of the issue:

    • 1 in 4 women will be a victim to sexual assault or attempted assault in their lifetimes (National Audit Office, 2025)
    • 39% of secondary school teachers said they are aware of at least one incident of misogynistic behaviour from a pupil in the last week (BBC, 2025)
    • 3 in 5 women have experienced sexual harassment, bullying or verbal abuse in the workplace. 3 in 5 have experienced three or more incidents of bullying at work (Trades Union Congress, 2023)

These figures underline the urgent need for awareness, prevention, and meaningful support.

Key Statistics on Violence Against Women and Girls

Recent data on violence against women and girls in the UK paints a concerning picture:

    • Domestic abuse costs the UK an estimated £23 billion a year.
    • 70,330 was the highest ever number of rapes recorded in 2022 in England and Wales.
    • In 2022, only 2,223 rape cases resulted in charges in England and Wales.
    • Calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline rose by 65% during early 2020.
    • 41% of girls aged 14–17 in intimate relationships report experiencing sexual violence from a partner.
    • 93% of defendants in domestic abuse cases are male, while 84% of victims are female.
    • Online abuse, including cyberbullying and trolling, is a growing problem for women and girls in the UK.
    • Harmful practices including FGM, breast ironing, forced marriage, and virginity testing still occur in the UK.

These statistics show that violence against women remains a pervasive issue requiring collective, sustained action.

White Ribbon Day 2025 Theme: “We Speak Up”

Each year, White Ribbon UK focuses on a theme encouraging individuals, particularly men, to become active allies in ending violence against women.

For 2025, the theme is “We Speak Up”, encouraging everyone to challenge harmful behaviour, call out misogyny, and promote a culture where women and girls are safe, respected, and equal.
