What are the legal grounds for divorce?

Divorce laws have recently changed and it is no longer necessary to prove the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage through anything other than a signed statement that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. This replaces the previous requirement to rely on adultery, behaviour, separation (2 years or 5 years) or desertion. For more information about changes to the grounds for divorce, read about new divorce rules coming into force in 2022.
Our family team can offer help and advice regarding all aspects of the divorce process including help with financial and child contact issues. We offer an initial advice appointment with one of our family lawyers for a fixed fee of just £250+VAT plus £13.50 for an ID check.
