From navigating separation to planning how an estate or family farm passes to the next generation, important family decisions call for clear advice and an understanding of what matters most.
We are delighted to announce two senior promotions for lawyers who help our clients through these moments, with Cara Watson promoted to Partner and Emma McGrath appointed as Head of Family. Both promotions recognise their experience, technical expertise and dedication to client service.
Cara joined Hegarty in 2023 and brings more than 19 years’ experience in private client law. Working in our Wills, Trusts and Probate team, she advises individuals and families on wills, trusts, estate administration and planning for later life. Her experience includes high-value and cross-border estates and complex Court of Protection applications.
Cara also specialises in helping farming families with estate and succession planning. Married to a farmer herself, she combines professional expertise with personal insight into the challenges of passing a family farm to the next generation.
Cara said: “Planning for the future often starts with a conversation people have been putting off. They may be unsure how to provide for their family, protect someone vulnerable or pass on a farm that has been in the family for generations.
“My role is to help them work through those questions and put plans in place that reflect their wishes. I look forward to continuing to support our clients and contributing to Hegarty’s future.”
Emma, who is already a Partner at Hegarty, takes on leadership of our Family team. Having qualified as a solicitor in 2008, she advises on divorce, financial settlements, arrangements for children, cohabitation and prenuptial agreements.
As a member of Resolution and an accredited specialist in financial remedies, Emma promotes a constructive approach to resolving family issues, helping clients understand their options and find a way forward.
Emma said: “When someone comes to us about a family issue, they often have immediate worries about their home, their finances or their children. Understanding their options can make a real difference at a time when the future feels uncertain.
“I want clients to feel listened to and leave with a clearer sense of their next steps. As Head of Family, I look forward to supporting our team as we help people through some of life’s most difficult decisions.”
Kally Singh, Senior Partner at Hegarty, said: “Cara and Emma understand that behind every legal matter are people making decisions that can affect their families for years to come. They bring the expertise those decisions require, alongside a thoughtful and approachable manner.
“These appointments recognise their contribution to our clients and colleagues. We are delighted to welcome Cara to the Partnership and see Emma take on leadership of our Family team.”
